Rio Tinto Coal Australia helps preserve local history
Clermont's history is in good hands with the announcement that a long term plan will be developed to help preserve the town's museum.
With assistance from Rio Tinto Coal Australia's Blair Athol Mine Community Development Fund, Isaac Regional Council will employ an independent consultant to develop a strategic plan to improve the long term viability and sustainability of the Clermont Museum.
Blair Athol General Manager Operations, Andrew Cole, said the mine was keen to support an initiative that would assist the future development of the museum.
"The Clermont Museum is an important facility in our community that reminds us of this region's rich history, its progress and how it has embraced change," Mr Cole said.
"The Blair Athol Mine Community Development Fund looks to support projects that will help build capacity and growth long after mining has taken place.
"This funding will employ an independent consultant to assess the issues that currently affect the museum's day to day running and develop a plan to ensure its future viability."
Opened in 1988, the future of the Clermont Museum was in jeopardy with the Clermont and District Historical Society showing concern for the viability of the daily operations of the museum.
Isaac Regional Council Mayor Cr Cedric Marshall said by developing a plan for the museum's future, the Clermont and District Historical Society will be able to address issues, ultimately creating a better chance for the museum to survive.
"The Clermont Museum is one of only three museums in the Isaac region and is a vital attraction for tourists and locals," Cr Marshall said.
"Currently the museum is under utilised but holds potential to become an asset to the region in relation to cultural and heritage tourism and as a valuable educational tool.
"Through developing a strategic plan we aim to create a sustainable and progressive museum which showcases exhibitions that are engaging and educational and will ultimately increase visitor numbers."
Blair Athol Mine Community Development Fund Executive Officer Samantha Faint said this year the fund has provided $198,865 to four programmes aimed at generating positive long term benefits for the community of Clermont.
